AT A GLANCE wave

WHO SHOULD GET TESTED
FOR TRICHOMONIASIS?

Most Trichomonas vaginalis infections are asymptomatic.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends Trichomonas testing for:

Females

  • With new sexual partners
  • With multiple sexual partners
  • Pregnant women
  • Who are HIV-positive

Males

  • Routine screening is not recommended

WHEN TO GET TESTED
FOR TRICHOMONIASIS?

Since most T. vaginalis infections are asymptomatic, the exact incubation period is unknown. The estimated incubation period is 5-28 days.

No trichomoniasis symptoms

  • Testing for trich is recommended within 30 days of exposure.

With trichomoniasis symptoms

  • Testing can be done at any time, irrespective of the amount of time passed since the sexual encounter that you believe may have given you Trichomoniasis.
  • A vaginal swab can be performed as early as 5 days after exposure. If performed 4 weeks after exposure, the accuracy rate is 96%.
  • A penile swab can be performed as early as 5 days after exposure. If performed 4 weeks after exposure, the accuracy rate is 96%.
  • A urine test can be performed as early as 5 days after exposure. If performed 4 weeks after exposure, the accuracy rate is 64-75%.

TRICHOMONIASIS TEST TYPES

Two types of Trichomonas tests are available: swab and urine tests.

  • Male
    • Urine test and urethral swab
  • Female
    • Urine test and vaginal swab

Both types of trichomoniasis tests (swab and urine) are NAAT (Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests) PCR tests. However, the test accuracy is higher for swab (96%) than for urine (64%-75%).

TRICHOMONIASIS TEST PREPARATION

For the most accurate testing:

  • Urine test: Avoid urinating for 2 hours prior
  • Vaginal swab: Avoid douching and using vaginal creams for 24 hours prior
  • Penile swab: No preparation needed
