How Much Is a Rapid Syphilis Test?
A rapid syphilis test costs $80. You pay at our office, and each price below is the total. We add no office visit fee, even if Dr. Fuzayloff examines you.

A rapid test takes 30 minutes or less, from the finger prick to your result. A lab test takes 1 to 2 days.
Some people call the rapid test an instant syphilis test. You can wait for your result in the office, or we can call or email it to you.
For a lab syphilis blood test, we draw blood from your arm and send it to a lab. The result comes back the next day or within 2 days.
Same-Day Syphilis Test: How the Visit Works

Come in during office hours, or book a time that suits you. You don't need to fast or prepare. We see patients 18 and older.

We take them from a quick finger prick, not a needle in your arm.

He goes over your result with you before you leave.
The Syphilis Health Check is the syphilis rapid test we use. The FDA, the U.S. agency that reviews medical tests, has cleared it. It looks for antibodies, the proteins your body makes to fight syphilis.
Is the Rapid Test Right for You?
The rapid test is a good choice if you want an answer today and have never had syphilis.
A lab blood test is the better choice if:
- You have had syphilis before. The antibodies this test looks for usually stay in your blood for life, even after treatment. The rapid test will read positive and can't tell an old infection from a new one. A lab blood test called an RPR can.
- You were exposed very recently. Your body needs time to make antibodies, so a test taken too soon can miss an infection.
- You want your insurance to pay. Lab tests can go through your insurance. Rapid tests cannot.

We draw blood for the confirmation test.
We send it to a lab, which bills you separately. We order an RPR blood test, and the lab adds its own syphilis tests to confirm the result. You can also get the confirmation test at low or no cost at the city's Chelsea Sexual Health Clinic.

You start treatment.
Syphilis is curable with antibiotics. Dr. Fuzayloff sends a prescription for doxycycline, an antibiotic pill, to your pharmacy, with no extra office charge.
- You take it twice a day for 14 days for an early infection, or for 28 days for one you have had for more than a year or can't date.
- You can start at your visit or wait for the lab result.
The CDC, the U.S. public health agency, lists a penicillin shot as the first-choice treatment. As of March 2026 the shot is in short supply across the country, so the CDC recommends doxycycline for men and for women who are not pregnant.
We do not give the penicillin shot in our office. If you are pregnant, tell Dr. Fuzayloff, because penicillin is the only recommended treatment during pregnancy.

Rapid Syphilis Test FAQ
How accurate is a rapid syphilis test?
In the test maker's study of 415 people, reported in its 2024 leaflet, the rapid test agreed with lab testing in 98% of positive cases and 97% of negative cases. Independent studies reviewed by the CDC in 2024 found that it misses more infections than that. This is why a lab test confirms every positive result. A negative result does not fully rule out syphilis if you were exposed recently or have symptoms.
Is there a rapid syphilis test I can do at home?
Yes. In August 2024 the FDA authorized the first at-home syphilis test, sold without a prescription. It gives a result in about 15 minutes. A positive result at home still needs a lab test from a health care provider, and the test reads positive if you were treated for syphilis in the past. At our clinic, you see the doctor, give blood for the confirmation test and can start treatment in one visit.
Is a rapid syphilis test confidential?
Yes. Federal privacy law (HIPAA) protects your visit and your result. As the law requires, clinics and labs in New York report a lab-confirmed syphilis case to the health department.
Can I get a rapid syphilis test if I have symptoms?
Yes. Dr. Fuzayloff examines you at the same visit for no extra fee. A new sore can appear before the test turns positive, so if your result is negative he may add a lab test.
