Trichomoniasis Test NYC

Same-day trichomoniasis test for women, with your result in 30 minutes or less.

$70, paid at our office, and Dr. Fuzayloff sees you himself. We add no office visit fee.

Rapid tests are self-pay, so we don't bill your insurance.

How we test for trichomoniasis

The doctor takes a swab from inside the vagina and puts it straight into the rapid test here in our office. We don't send anything to a lab, so there is nothing to wait for at home. Our rapid trich test works on a vaginal swab, not urine.

The test is the OSOM Trichomonas Rapid Test, and the FDA has cleared it for use in women. It looks for the parasite that causes trich.

Why trich is easy to miss

Trichomoniasis, or trich, is a common STD caused by a tiny parasite. Most people who have it, 70 to 85 out of 100, have few or no symptoms, and without treatment it can last for months or even years.

Routine STD checks also often leave it out, because there is no general guideline to check everyone for it. If your last STD panel came back clean, it may not have included trich. You need an STD test for trichomoniasis specifically, and that is what our trichomoniasis test in NYC is for.

When to get tested

  • You have discharge that looks yellow-green or smells bad, or itching and irritation.
  • A partner has tested positive for trich.
  • You have a new partner, or more than one partner.

Treating trich matters beyond comfort: having it makes you about 1.5 times more likely to get HIV if you are exposed.

What to expect

Results before you leave

The test develops while you wait, and the doctor gives you the result in person. In studies reviewed by the CDC, it caught 82 to 95 of every 100 infections, and 97 to 100 of every 100 women without trich correctly tested negative.

If your test is positive

The doctor sends a prescription to your pharmacy the same day, and we charge nothing extra for prescribing. Treatment for women is usually an antibiotic pill taken for 7 days. Your partner needs treatment too, and you should both avoid sex until you have both finished treatment. Come back for a retest about 3 months later, because trich often returns.

Prefer to use insurance?

Rapid tests are self-pay only. You can choose our lab trichomoniasis test instead: the testing goes through your insurance, and results take 3 to 5 days. If your plan isn't one we take, the office visit fee in the table above applies.

Trichomoniasis test questions

Do they test for trichomoniasis during pregnancy?

Not routinely. Doctors don't routinely check pregnant women for trich when they have no symptoms. If you're pregnant and have symptoms such as discharge or irritation, get tested and treated: trich in pregnancy is linked to early delivery and low birth weight.

Can you test negative for trichomoniasis and still have it?

Yes. No test catches every infection. If your rapid test is negative but your symptoms don't go away, the next step is a lab test, which finds infections the rapid test can miss.

Does trichomoniasis show up on a chlamydia test?

No. A chlamydia test on its own doesn't look for trich. You need a trich test, or a combined test that includes it, like our rapid chlamydia, gonorrhea and trichomoniasis test.

Does a Pap smear test for trichomoniasis?

No. A Pap smear sometimes shows trich by chance, but it is not a test for it. If a Pap result mentions trich, get a proper trich test to confirm it.

Can you have trich for years without knowing?

Yes. Trich often causes no symptoms, so a positive result doesn't tell you when you caught it. You or your partner may have had it since before you met.
