What is the alternative treatment option, and why is it called alternative?

The alternative treatment regimen is:

Doxycycline 100 milligrams (mg) orally 2 times/day for 7 days, followed by azithromycin 1 gram (g) orally initial dose, followed by 500 mg orally once daily for 3 additional days (2.5 g total)

Why is it called an alternative? Because many Mycoplasma genitalium infections are resistant to the macrolides group(azithromycin belongs to that group). Usually, the macrolide resistance test must be done before using this therapy regimen, and it is not available.

Can I choose an alternative treatment without the resistance testing?

Yes, you can if moxifloxacin cannot be taken. But it would be best to remember that the wrong medication regimen can lead to a more resistant strain that is more difficult to treat.

What is the cure rate for M.genitalium treatment?

If the proper medication is used, the cure rate is over 90%

Do sexual partners need to be treated?

Sex partners of patients with M.genitalium should be tested and treated if they are positive.

The testing was especially recommended if the partner was having symptoms.

When the test of cure can be done?

Mycoplasma genitalium test of cure can be done 21 days after finishing the treatment regimen.

Is the test of cure necessary?

The test of cure for Mgen is usually not advised unless:

The alternative treatment regimen was used (azithromycin)

The treated person was symptomatic

The treated person was diagnosed with persistent urethritis, cervicitis, or PID (pelvic inflammatory disease)
