How Long Does a Rapid HIV Test Take?
Results take 30 minutes or less, so this is a same-day HIV test.
The test we use
We use the Abbott Determine HIV-1/2 Ag/Ab Combo, an FDA-approved 4th generation rapid test. It looks for two things. One is HIV antibodies, which your body makes to fight the virus. The other is an early piece of the virus itself, called the p24 antigen. Because it looks for both, it can find HIV sooner than tests that look for antibodies alone.
When a result is reliable
No test can find HIV the day after exposure. This rapid test usually detects HIV 18 to 90 days after exposure. If your exposure was recent, Dr. Fuzayloff may recommend a lab blood test instead, which usually detects HIV sooner, 18 to 45 days after exposure.

The Chembio DPP HIV-Syphilis test checks for both infections from one drop of blood, for $130.
It finds a new HIV infection later than the $90 test. Its HIV part looks for antibodies only, so it usually detects HIV 23 to 90 days after exposure. For the earliest HIV detection plus syphilis, choose the $90 HIV test with a separate rapid syphilis test, $170 in total.
Once you've had syphilis, the syphilis result usually stays positive for life, even after treatment. If you've had syphilis before, a positive result needs an RPR blood test to tell an old infection from a new one.

He graduated from the NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine (NYCOM) in 2001 and trained in internal medicine at New York Presbyterian Queens. He worked nine years as a hospital physician, and has run his own practice since 2006. He is board-certified in internal medicine by the American Board of Internal Medicine (ABIM).

What Happens If Your HIV Test Is Positive?
A positive rapid test is not yet a diagnosis. A lab test has to confirm every positive rapid HIV result.

Is HIV testing free in NYC?
Yes, at some places. New York City's public sexual health clinics offer HIV testing at low or no cost. Here, a rapid HIV test is $90, and for that you see Dr. Fuzayloff in person, have your result during your visit, and can test as often as you need.

Is rapid HIV testing confidential?
Yes. HIV test results are confidential under New York law. Like every New York provider, we must report a confirmed HIV diagnosis to the State Health Department, which keeps it confidential.
How often should I get tested for HIV?
At least once if you're 13 to 64, and at least once a year if you've had more than one partner since your last test, the CDC says. Sexually active gay and bisexual men may benefit from testing every 3 to 6 months.
