WHO SHOULD GET TESTED FOR UREAPLASMA?

Screening or routine testing

  • The CDC does not recommend routine screening for ureaplasma because it is considered part of the normal microbiome (tiny organisms that live in and on the human body and help with digestion, fighting infection, etc.). However, sometimes these harmless bacteria become too numerous and cause inflammation of healthy tissues.
Below you can see recommendations for ureaplasma testing for men and women

Females who should be tested for ureaplasma

  • Pregnant women
  • Females who have vaginal discharge, odor, or burning that cannot be attributed to any other sexually transmitted infection (chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma, BV , vaginal yeast infection
  • Females with recurrent or resistant BV
  • Females who do not respond to antibiotic treatment of a common infection

Males who should be tested for ureaplasma

  • Males need to get the ureaplasma diagnosis and treatment if their female sexual partner has ureaplasma symptoms
  • Males who have symptoms of the urinary tract infections that cannot be attributed to any other condition (chlamydia, gonorrhea, mycoplasma genitalium, and trichomoniasis)
