WHO SHOULD GET TESTED FOR HIV?

HIV testing is important and should be done if you have early HIV symptoms or are at high risk for HIV.

Symptoms

HIV, in its early stages, can present with many nonspecific symptoms, so the threshold for suspicion should be very low. These nonspecific symptoms include the following:

  • Fever with other nonspecific symptoms
  • Skin rash and fever
  • Mouth ulcers
  • Enlarged lymph nodes
  • Diarrhea
  • Loss of appetite and weight loss

High-risk persons

If you had high-risk contact, you should be screened for HIV, and follow-up HIV testing should be done 4–6 months later (the timing depends on the screening test results). According to the CDC, the following persons are considered to be at high risk of contracting the HIV infection:

  • MSMs
  • Users of injected drugs
  • Sex workers and their clients
  • People with multiple sex partners
  • People practicing unprotected sex
  • Prisoners
  • Those who have other sexually transmitted infections (e.g. chlamydia, syphilis, and herpes)
  • Transgender people

WHEN TO GET HIV TESTING?

Different types of HIV tests should be done at different times:

  • The ultrasensitive HIV RNA PCR test used for early detection is sensitive 5 days after exposure
  • The HIV RNA PCR test can be done 10 days after exposure
  • The HIV fourth-generation test (Ab/Ag) can be done as early as 13 days after exposure
  • The HIV Ab test (third-generation) can be done as early as 22 days after exposure
