What are sexually transmitted diseases (STDs)?
STDs are diseases that are mainly transmitted from one person to another during sexual activity. They can be spread through vaginal, oral, and anal sex.
Who needs to get tested for sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and how often?
Anyone who’s sexually active, especially when you have more than one partner, should get STD testing every 6 months. It is also recommended to do it before starting a new relationship. If you think you have been exposed to an STI or are experiencing symptoms, get checked right away.
What kinds of tests are available and which ones are performed by STD Clinic NY?
You can get checked for eight major and most common sexually transmitted diseases at our clinic: HIV, Herpes 1, Herpes 2, Syphilis, Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Hepatitis . There’s no single exam for all diseases, therefore you and our doctor will determine which exam is more suitable for you.
How are they diagnosed?
Testing can be done through various methods and it depends on which infection you have. Sometimes a diagnosis can be made based on your symptoms alone. STDs like HIV, Syphilis, Hepatitis B/C, and Herpes can be detected through a blood test. A urine sample will be needed to screen for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea. Once our doctor determines which test you need, we will get a blood sample, urine sample, or both. These will only be sent to a trusted certified laboratory participating with our office.
How are they treated?
Our STD doctor will choose the best course of treatment depending on the disease you have. Antibiotics can be used to treat STDs such as Chlamydia, Gonorrhea, and Syphilis. However, HIV and Herpes, currently have no cure, though medications are available to control the diseases.
What should I expect during my visit?
To decide which STD test is appropriate, our doctor will ask you questions about your sexual practices (number of partners, use of condoms, etc.), whether you have ever had any STD(s), to describe current symptoms you may be experiencing, if your partner(s) have any STDs or symptoms. It is important to be accurate and provide as much detail as you can, so that we can provide you with the best medical service. STD Clinic NY takes your privacy very seriously; so don’t be afraid or ashamed when discussing your sexual history.
Where is your center located?
Our office located in Midtown Manhattan in the heart of New York City. We are conveniently located two blocks away from main train stations like 42nd Street and Grand Central Terminal. In addition, we offer evening hours and is open on Saturdays. Same day appointments are also available.
How long before I get my test results?
Test results will be ready in 3-5 business days. Our physician will call and speak directly to you to maintain your privacy. If your results come back positive for an STI, the doctor will answer all questions you might have, discuss the best course of treatment, and prescribe medication that you can pick up at your pharmacy of choice. At your request, we can also provide you with a copy of your laboratory results.
Are the tests offered at your clinic accurate?
All exams offered at our clinic are done by a licensed, experienced physician. Blood and urine samples are sent for examination to a certified laboratory.
What are the payment options?
If you’re insured, the STD Clinic will bill your health insurance for any exams and treatments you may receive. If you don’t have health insurance or are worried about your confidentiality, you can pay out of pocket. We offer one of the most affordable prices in all NYC without sacrificing your privacy or accuracy. Payments can be done in cash or by credit card- VISA, MasterCard, Discover, or American Express.
